Reviews for A Piece of My Heart

Kate hadn't been just the girl next door. She'd been Mick's life, and he hers. When an unforeseen force drives them apart they're left with wounds that refuse to heal.

Now, ten years on, Mick's father's will should have been straightforward, except his addendum was like ice water in Mick's face. It's essential Mick and Kate work together to save his family's farm. He doesn't count on his new manager being accused of murder, and she doesn't expect a dangerously seductive woman from Dublin claiming Mick is the father of her child.

Kate thought she was falling in love with Mick all over again, but this newest revelation is too much for her. She is determined to say goodbye to her childhood sweetheart forever, but Mick has other plans for her future. And none of them involve goodbye.

First love, true love, forever love refuses to be denied. It may hide but it abides. It fights for fulfillment, bearing all the bruises, aches, hurts and pain it must as it steadfastly holds its place in the hearts of Kate Conneely and Mick Spillane, soul mates since childhood.

Ten years ago, at age fifteen, Kate felt she could see Mick’s soul in his eyes. She knew she loved him. Then, one day she saw something else, like resentment or hate in his eyes. He shut her out and drifted away. She never knew why. He went away to the university then to a job in Dublin, rarely returning to the farm that had been in his family for six generation, even when his parents were terminally ill. Polite, but unyielding to Kate’s pleas for him to come home and take care of his folks, Mick, the only best friend she ever had, broke Kate’s heart again and again.

After ten years, terms of Mick’s father’s will make it necessary for Kate and Mick to communicate. The emotional struggles and internal conflicts each of them suffered in the last years have stymied both of them from truly getting on with their lives.

Kate became a palliative care nurse in Galway City hospital but for the past five years tended Mick’s parents. Even though she is compassionate, her Irish temper rises at Mick’s inexplicable attitude toward his inheritance and her. She sees his brooding, moody ways but does not see the pain and guilt he carries deep inside.
A Piece of My Heart has a sprinkling of Irish magic, a three thousand-year-old stone circle ( Kate and Mick’s secret place), a touch of old customs and traditions, as well as a hint of the diversity of the people, their speech, and moral codes. It also shows strong emotions credited to the Irish and, what Mick himself calls, his “pathetic pride”.

The antagonist in the story plays a huge role in the enfolding of the plot. He stirs up a whole new set of emotions. He creates tensions that make the heart race with fear and loathing. His crudeness, cruelty, and bullying ways stand out. They are like a dark thread woven in a tapestry that has a few garish threads of big city pub scenes, but otherwise is woven with gentle, muted colors of family love, support of friends, and love of animals. This dark thread is a sharp contrast to the ever-present golden thread of love that is barely noticeable in part of the tapestry’s design and the focal point in other parts.

Kemberlee Shortland’s thorough character development and the world-rocking love scenes make A Piece of My Heart captivating, but most of all it is the long-suffering love that hides but abides, cries but never dies that makes this beautiful tapestry of a tale memorable.

Kate Conneely was only hired help for Mick’s family. Yet they thought her important enough to mention in the will. The bad part is seeing Mick again. Michael ‘Mick’ Spillane shows up for his father’s funeral and reading of the will. He thought it would be quick and easy then things turned complicated. Kate is surprised to be mentioned in Mick’s father’s will. She even gets the dog, Molly. Mick is not too happy. He does not mind Kate being mentioned, but thanks to his father, things have changed. If he considers selling the farm, it will automatically revert to Kate. She was the one who had been there for his father, even giving Mick updates of his condition. Mick cannot leave his museum job in Dublin. With one thing left to do, he hires a manager to care for the farm. After ten years, he and Kate still have unfinished business between them that still stirs within their hearts. Can they stop being strangers long enough to form that bond they once shared, or will their newfound romance be suddenly interrupted? I have to admit the emotions are threefold in A Piece of My Heart. When Mick and Kate ache to be with each other, I could practically see it in their eyes and hear it in their voice. The way they try to hold their control intact is so beautifully penned. I love the part about the circle, and the place they shared. Kemberlee Shortland creates a stunning read that touches upon the heartstrings. The storytelling is at its best. The descriptions are marvelously crafted and thec haracters absolutely lifelike. With emotions turning faster than a roller coaster, she allows the reader to visualize parts of Ireland with romance and a bit of suspense along the way.

Set in Ireland, present date. Michael "Mick" Spillane's life is in Dublin. He has no interest in the family farm. But after his father dies, Mick must return to Connemara for the funeral and reading of the will. Mick hopes to simply sell the farm and return to Dublin as quickly as possible. The last thing Mick expects is to learn that his father had added an addendum to his will. Should Mick try to sell the family farm, everything will go to Kate Conneely.

Mick and Kate had been very close as they grew up together. Their friendship had been changing into something much deeper until Kate, at the tender age of fifteen, suddenly found Mick avoiding her. She never understood what had happened to cause the chasm between them. When Mick's mother became ill, Kate gave up her medical career to help the Spillane family. Soon after Mrs. Spillane's death, Mr. Spillane's health went bad. It was Kate who helped keep the farm going. Yet still Kate is caught totally off guard when the addendum is read.

A compromise is reached and Mick hires a manager to live on-site, in a small apartment on the farm, and run the place. Kate agrees to drop by once or twice each week to keep an eye on things. The new manager is not to Kate liking. Can Kate prove to Mick the shady character of his new manager? Can she help Mick realize and come to have pride in his family's land and its history? And most importantly, can she keep her heart from shattering all over again?

***** FIVE STARS! Since this story is set in Ireland, be prepared for a bit of their slang words. There are not many, but if you do not live in the U.K., they may jump out and surprise you. The story caught my interest quickly. At first, I found myself disappointed in Mick's selfish life style and his blindness to the health of his parents. But then I realized that many people move away from their parents' area and begin their own lives. The author's descriptions of Mick knowing of his parents' bad health, but not really believing it, is totally accurate. Kemberlee Shortland has written a heartwarming story that will long remain in my mind. Recommended! *****
