Reviews from Pretend I'm Yours

by Phyllis Campbell

Mercedes' sister Katherine is in an asylum and when she goes to visit her she hears a dreadful story of her husband's mistreatment. Kat implores her to make her husband pay. Mercedes is determined to go to America and get Kat's husband to pay for the treatment Kat so desperately needs. When she arrives, she is immediately mistaken as her sister. Not surprising because they are identical twins. Mercedes decides to keep up the deceit in order to try and steal the money from the monster that made her sister so ill. Strangely though, Mercedes learns that Kat hasn't been telling the whole truth and William, her husband is nothing like Kat described him. Mercedes can't help but feel attraction toward this handsome man and is devastated to find out that Kat was the one treating him badly with her trysts and lies. William has a few secrets of his own and at the beginnings of a revolution he knows not who he can turn to. He is more than surprised by his wife's change of character and cannot believe she is truly trying to mend her ways as she claims, but her sweetness, her purity and her obvious distaste of other men's attentions slowly work on him and he finds himself falling in love with his wife. But he is not yet convinced that she is the women he originally married.

Phyllis Campbell has done it again! A wonderful story set in Philadelphia, 1764, shortly before the American Revolution against the British, Ms. Campbell tells the story of a man determined to break out from under the rule of the British, and his British wife. William is a larger than life hero, strong, determined, and honorable. A devoted father to his children and so wanting to be a devoted husband. His disappointment in his wife is palpable and the reader just cannot help but fall in love with him. Mercedes is his perfect partner. This reviewer enjoyed reading their love story immensely. When Ms. Campbell holds out the deceit until it's almost unbearable, she solves the problems just before the reader is ready to scream! Sexual tension is high between these two lovers. In her indomitable way, Ms. Campbell keeps her readers on a cloud of sensual torture until she gives her readers some very satisfying love scenes. Smoky hot and steamy, the reader will be cheering as William and Mercedes finally find love in each other's arms. The plot is exciting and builds up to an explosive end. There are a lot of emotions in this great story. Ms. Campbell has her readers laughing, cheering, getting mad at the bad guys and reaching for the tissues. Lovers of historical romance will devour this book with relish. This reviewer LOVED it!!
